As we wrap up a jam packed and much anticipated Euros 2024, it's important to reflect on some of the most memorable moments of the tournament. The Euros 2024 delivered some unforgettable football moments, etching new memories into the annals of the sport's history. The tournament saw breath-taking goals, dramatic comebacks, and heart-stopping penalty shootouts.
5. Pepe

When discussing iconic footballers, some will talk about Pele, Ronaldo, Messi or Ronaldinho. Having said that, Pepe is someone who I see as admirable, inspiring and a true national treasure to Portugal. Pepe, whose full name is Képler Laveran de Lima Ferreira, is a professional footballer known for his strong defensive capabilities and aggressive style of play. Born on February 26, 1983, in Maceió, Brazil, Pepe later became a naturalized Portuguese citizen and has represented the Portuguese national team. At the age of 41, he examples why age is nothing but a number. At the Euros, we saw Pepe play with fight, passion, commitment and resilience. When Portugal faced France, some questioned whether the Portuguese star had the strength and calibre to represent the team. Pepe soon had these concerns shut down as we saw him challenge countless times the French national team.
Pepe once again demonstrated why he is considered one of the most formidable defenders in football. Despite being in the latter stages of his career, his performance was marked by remarkable resilience, leadership, and defensive acumen. Anchoring the Portuguese defence, Pepe showcased his exceptional reading of the game, making crucial interceptions and tackles that thwarted numerous opposition attacks. His experience and calm under pressure were invaluable to Portugal, particularly in high-stakes matches. Additionally, his physical presence and aerial dominance were evident both in defence and during set-pieces. Pepe's ability to inspire and organize the backline was instrumental in Portugal's deep run in the tournament, reaffirming his status as a stalwart in international football.
4. Ollie Watkins last minute goal

Ollie Watkins is an English professional footballer known for his versatility, pace, and keen eye for goal. As an Arsenal supporter, I can personally say Ollie Watkins has been a dark force on the Aston Villa team whenever they play against the Gunners. Watkins' all-around game, combining technical skill with physical prowess, saw him earn call-ups to the England national team, where he continued to be a promising talent for the future. We got to witness this as he scored England's winning goal in the most desperate time of need against the Netherlands.
In his post match interview Watkins said:
''I just feel like whatever you put into the universe you get back. I'm a firm believer that you can believe something but if you deep down really truly believe that it can happen then I think it will''
His dedication and consistent performances have made him a fan favourite and a crucial asset for any team he represents.
3. Lamine Yamal's goal

Lamine Yamal's goal at the Euros 2024 was a moment of brilliance that captured the attention of football fans worldwide. Showcasing his exceptional skill and composure, Yamal received the ball just outside the penalty area, deftly manoeuvring past two defenders with a swift turn and burst of speed. His precise and powerful strike from the edge of the box left the goalkeeper with no chance, the ball curling perfectly into the top corner. This goal not only demonstrated Yamal's technical prowess and vision on the field but also solidified his status as one of the tournament's standout performers, contributing significantly to his team's success in the competition.

2. England Win On Penalties

After the agonizing crash out of the tournament for the 2020 Euro's, England finally had another chance to clear a memory that haunted them for 3 years by making it through a penalty shoot out against Switzerland.
Taking a football penalty is one of the most high-pressure moments in the sport, requiring a blend of physical skill and mental fortitude. The challenge begins with the intense focus needed to strike the ball accurately and powerfully, aiming to outwit a goalkeeper who is equally determined to make a save. The mental pressure is immense, as the penalty taker must remain calm and composed amidst the tension, often in front of thousands of spectators and with the weight of their team's hopes resting on their shoulders. Factors such as the quality of the pitch, weather conditions, and the psychological battle with the goalkeeper add layers of complexity. The margin for error is incredibly slim; a slight miscalculation can result in a miss, turning potential triumph into disappointment.
In a dramatic and nerve-wracking conclusion to their Euro 2024 campaign, England triumphed over Switzerland in a gripping penalty shootout. The match, held in a stadium brimming with tension and anticipation, saw both teams giving their all in a tightly contested battle that ended in a draw after extra time. As the shootout commenced, the pressure was palpable, but the English players displayed remarkable composure and precision. England's goalkeeper emerged as a hero, making crucial saves that turned the tide in their favour. Each successful penalty was met with roars of jubilation from the English fans, who had long awaited such a moment. When the decisive penalty hit the back of the net, it marked a historic victory, filling the nation with pride and joy, and ending years of penalty heartbreak in major tournaments.

Ivan Toney's penalty was a hot topic of discussion as he impressed viewers by smashing the ball into the goal with no direct eye contact.

Bukayo Saka was all smiles as he triumphed with the team!
Jude Bellingham bicycle kick

At number one I am holding Jude Bellingham at the very top for his unpredicted last minute goal for England using the bicycle kick! For those who play football regularly, you will know there is an immense amount of confidence is needed to score using this technique.
Scoring a goal with a bicycle kick in football is an extraordinary skill that requires a unique combination of athleticism, timing, and spatial awareness. The player must perfectly time their jump, positioning their body horizontally in mid-air, while simultaneously executing a backward flip. This acrobatic manoeuvre demands exceptional core strength, flexibility, and coordination to ensure a powerful and accurate strike. Additionally, the player must maintain acute awareness of the ball's trajectory, the positioning of defenders, and the goalkeeper's location. The margin for error is incredibly narrow, as a mistimed jump or misjudged angle can easily result in a missed opportunity or an awkward fall. Successfully executing a bicycle kick not only showcases a player's technical prowess but also creates a moment of sheer brilliance that can leave spectators in awe.

To create this magical moment on the pitch, you need the right amount of momentum, power, height and accuracy. Jude exampled this perfectly and gave England and exceptional win. With prowess and strength, it gave England the hope that belief that you should never give up. Want to see more talented footballers?
